Kassandra Gibson

University of Mount Union

My name is Kassandra Gibson and I am a student at the University of Mount Union, double-majoring in Art (Graphic Design concentration) and Japanese. I am primarily a digital artist, but the University of Mount Union has a diverse curriculum and study abroad opportunities, which have allowed me to explore my skills in many different fields of art. In the fall of 2016, I spent a semester at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan studying Japanese language, culture, and art.

The great Hayao Miyazaki, a world-renowned and beloved film director, writer, and animator said “the creation of a single world comes from a huge number of fragments and chaos.” In this collection of pieces from my past semesters at college, you can see how art and design can be expressed through many mediums, such as drawing, photography, sculpture, and ceramics. When creating new pieces, looking through a camera lens, or storyboarding ideas for new animations, I think about all of the different disciplines of art that I have had the opportunity to study. I believe that my time studying abroad in Japan has also given me a lot of inspiration and new insights that I can put into my work.

Knowledge of different forms and practices of art can help to inspire and create, and can even give a project new life and depth.
